The Tennessee Titans did not have a happy or sentimental year. They were soon forgotten as a postseason afterthought after finishing 6-11.
Under general manager Ran Carthon, they hired new head coach Brian Callahan in the hopes that 2024 would bring better news.Ahead of the NFL training camp, those folks will be seeking to make cuts, and three candidates have come to light. Tre Avery, the cornerback, Kyle Phillips, the wide receiver, and Rashad Weaver, the edge rusher, are all on the potentially undesirable list.It became evident that the Titans had their starting lineup when L’Jarius Sneed and Chidobe Awuzie were ushered into the defensive back room. Sneed earned both of his Super Bowl rings while playing for the Kansas City Chiefs. Awuzie has seven years of experience and was previously with Cincinnati and Dallas.
Avery might go if two cornerbacks who are ready for the NFL are added. They didn’t think Avery’s 62 tackles and zero interceptions had enough influence to keep him on the field as much as he did in 2023, based on the moves made.Avery will compete with players like Caleb Farley, Eric Garror, and newcomer Jarvis Brownlee Jr. for a roster place with Roger McCreary firmly entrenched in the defensive backfield. In 2022, Avery became an undrafted free agent and signed with the Titans. In two seasons with the Titans, he has appeared in 29 games.WR There’s got to be a way for Kyle Phillips to stay well.
For Kyle Phillips, who only appeared in 13 games and caught 23 receptions in his first two NFL seasons, it has been a difficult journey. He was chosen by the Titans in the fifth round of the 2022 draft, coming out of UCLA. He hasn’t been able to go on the pitch, despite the appearance that he would have a chance to make an impression. He has been hindered by inconsistencies and injuries.The Titans might gain financially by benching Phillips. The present roster composition doesn’t imply the Titans had any grand plans to give him another lengthy look, but it wouldn’t be dramatic either.
Through free agency, Calvin Ridley joined the team, and DeAndre Hopkins is back. Tyler Boyd was then plucked off the market by the Titans.
That leaves Phillips, a slot guy like Boyd, with very little room. Phillips is unable to align at either X or Y.The NFL’s desire for edge rushers with even a semblance of playmaking ability is one of the best things about the position. Furthermore, Rashad Weaver is currently the only edge-rush player on a team devoid of strong players.A good choice is Harold Landry III. On the other hand, Arden Key serves as a good place to start. All Weaver needs to do is defeat Thomas Rush, Caleb Murphy, and Jaylen Harrell.
Weaver is aiming to commence his fourth season, whereas Murphy and Rush remained unbeaten as free agents. It was in the seventh round of the 2024 draft that Harrell arrived in Tennessee. Weaver had a limited role in 2021 as a rookie, but in 2022 he recorded 5.5 sacks. But in 15 games the previous year, he was unable to bring down a quarterback.Weaver, who is 259 pounds and stands 6-foot-4, is hardly a matchup threat to the opposition’s offense. An edge man should avoid handling someone who is easily handled.
It’s probably too late for these three players to turn around, but in the NFL, things can still surprise you.
