In a 5-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, rookie Luis Gil of the New York Yankees lost his third consecutive start after giving up four runs and two hits in four and a half innings along with three walks and two hit batters. Gil is 0-3 with a 14.90 ERA in his last three appearances after going 9-1 with a 2.03 ERA in his previous 14 outings. According to the YES Network, Yankees manager Aaron Boone summarized what he believes to be Gil’s problem. “I don’t think this is a fatigue issue,” Boone stated. I believe there is a slight out-of-sorts problem that is difficult to fix immediately.
For the Yankees on Tuesday, Gil got off to a strong start before things went south. Before Reds star Elly De La Cruz opened the fourth with a drive into the right-field corner for his sixth triple of the year, he retired nine straight batters. On the following pitch, Jeimer Candelario grounded out, allowing him to score.In the fifth inning, De La Cruz also scored a home run.
LHP Carlos Rodón will be facing the Yankees on the mound on Wednesday. These days, Rodón is going through his own difficulties. He has a 13.17 ERA and a record of 0–3 after having seven consecutive victories. Judge hit his third home run against Sam Moll in the seventh inning of the Yankees’ loss to the Reds. In terms of batting average (.321), home runs (32) and RBI (83), he leads the big leagues. With his 31st home run of the season over the weekend, Judge passed Yankees great Babe Ruth for the record for most home runs hit by a Yankee before July 1.
With 32 home runs through 87 games, Judge is one home run shy of his career high of 32, which he set the American League record for most home runs in a season in 2022. Prior to July, he had also scored more runs with the bat than he had during the entire 2023 campaign. To put it plainly, his output has been astounding.
